building a design system

Kaiser Permanente had coverage in 8 regions, each with different legal, business, and user needs. While the organization had a centralized national team to support consumer-facing digital experiences, there were still needs that stretched beyond the teams’ capacity. To handle the growing digital needs across the company, an enterprise-wide design system and model for scaling digital projects needed to be established.

I transformed the Design System offering from a team of 1 to a cross-functional, coordinated group that created, developed, and governed new functionality and value for users. The Design System team included:

  • 2 principal designers
  • 2 visual UX designers
  • 4 near-shore UX designers
  • 2 accessibility UX consultants
  • Several rotating front-end developers

To expedite the Design System work, I created a contribution model that allowed for the national team of 36+ UX designers to add new patterns and human interface guidelines as needed.

As an extension of the Design System work, I created and drove a digital services agency model to rapidly organize internal and external teams for organizational priorities. The model included end-to-end support from ideation through launch and optimization.
